Students gather many possessions throughout their lives. Many have accumulated books since childhood, and have not looked at them in years. These books could be used for many good causes; for example, a school book drive: Place large cardboard boxes in visible locations in the school. Advertise (posters, announcements, newsletters home) to students that they are encouraged to bring in any gently used books and donate them to the school. After a few weeks of collecting books a few options are open for discussion:

  1. Books can be donated to an overseas group that will share them with orphanages and schools. This will allow young children the joy of literacy as well as an opportunity to study English.
  2. Books can be donated to local day cares, shelters, or Family and Children Services where they will be given to local children who might not have their own books.
  3. Books can be sold at the school over a series of lunch hours, or even at a local elementary/secondary school (or both). Money raised can be donated to local charities or organizations.

This kind of activity allows students to see how very small actions can make a big difference in the lives of others. Many do not realize how objects at home that they have not used in years can put smiles on the faces of others. This hopefully will show them how blessed they are to have so much and allow them the opportunity to share their wealth with others.
