Are there not very few among us who do not appreciate receiving a letter, telling us that others are thinking about us, especially if we are far away from home? The students at our Catholic high school wanted to concretely show our Canadian troops presently deployed in Afghanistan that they were not being forgotten by the folks back home.

Students from several classes wrote very touching, yet heart-warming letters, telling the recipient that he or she was considered to be a hero(ine) in the eyes of the writer. Some students included drawings, poems they composed, even hand-made bracelets. All of the letters communicated a sense of caring, loving support, a sense of deep pride in our Canadian Military, and a hope and prayer that each man and woman presently deployed in such a dangerous environment be kept from harm and returned safely back home.

A three metre long banner filled with drawings and messages from hundreds of students accompanied the letters and it is now displayed in the dining area in Afghanistan. The troops are not only nourished by food, but just as importantly they can witness the message inscribed in huge, beautiful calligraphy written by one of our graduating students. At the top of the banner for all to see are the words: “Prayers and Good Wishes From Students Of St. Peter High School, Orleans, Ontario”
