Virtues & Themes: Possible Connections
Theological Virtue: Love
The gift of Christian love enables us to love God above all things and to love others as God loves them. Love is visible in our Catholic schools wherever the kindness, service and self-giving of Jesus are found. |
Students have the opportunity to learn practical lessons about love as they work at developing fundamental movement skills in work in groups, pairs and teams. Some practical examples include: working together to develop skills, looking out for one another (e.g., supporting lesser skilled classmates, making sure they play/move/receive a pass during scrimmage), planning routines or strategies together, supporting one another in times of triumph and defeat. Love is demonstrated in the process of helping one another grow. |
| Cardinal Virtue: Prudence Prudence has three steps: seeking the proper, most loving thing to do; judging what is the best choice; and confidently acting. |
Learning to refine and apply movement skills presents an opportunity to practice prudence. Students can learn to channel their enthusiasm prudently by: 1. Listening to instruction about skills and how to apply them, from someone who knows them well; 2. Judging when a particular skill is needed in a game or activity; 3. Confidently putting their skills to work and having fun! Learning skills while practicing prudence helps develop the whole person - mind, body and spirit. The lessons learned can spill over into the rest of students' lives. |
Catholic Character Theme: Community
Catholic schools are part of the parish faith community. Together with the parish, they are places where we can learn and grow as followers of Jesus. Community is visible when the friendship, love and kindness of Jesus are present in our Catholic schools. |
Each student has been given gifts to build up the believing community. We can foster the development of these gifts by encouraging students to work together and support each other as they learn new skills. In this way, we help them to build up the community at the class, school and wider parish and social levels. |
Catholic Character Theme: Stewardship
Stewardship is about caring for the gifts God has entrusted to us. We are called to be good stewards of our talents, our bodies, our souls, our communities and of God’s creation. |
In the classroom or gym we can establish an environment that focuses on cultivating stewardship for the gifts we have been given. We have been endowed with a variety of gifts and it is important that we develop them. Through discussion, students will grow in understanding that our gifts are different. As they become aware of their strengths and areas of growth, they can learn to be good stewards of their own talents and respectfully encourage their peers to develop what God has given them. Some students have an aptitude for math, others English and others movement, sports and games - all of us are called to help one another grow in stewardship. |
