Virtues & Themes: Possible Connections
Theological Virtue: Hope
By hope, we desire the happiness of the Kingdom and eternal life. Hope makes us able to trust to trust in God’s promises, no matter what the obstacles.
The media are powerful instruments for inspiring persons to live by the genuine hope that God is faithful and with us on our journey. Ask students to review media texts and forms to see whether they inspire them to put their trust - is this trust lasting and does it inspire a kind of hope to which we can entrust our lives? Invite them to create media works that reflect a true and lasting hope that inspires people to trust in God no matter what the obstacles.
Cardinal Virtue: Temperance
The cardinal virtue of temperance (moderation) is the practice of enjoying life’s pleasures in keeping with the call of the Gospel. A temperate person practices staying away from excesses. She or he strives… - to exercise moderation in eating and drinking, - to form chaste, healthy friendships, - to be honest about who they are (humility).
Temperance is about living a full human life as God intended for us in Christ. What kind of human life is portrayed in various media texts and forms? Is temperance a value that the media creators are trying to convey? Students can be invited to develop media works that reflect a message of temperance using conventions and techniques that are part of the forms for their focus. They can use the theme of temperance to create a variety of media texts for different purposes and audiences, using appropriate forms, conventions, and techniques. Lastly, while they reflect on and identify their strengths as media interpreters and creators, areas for improvement, and the strategies they found most helpful in understanding and creating media texts, they can also ask themselves whether their works carried a credible message about temperance.
Catholic Character Theme: Reverence
Reverence fuels our work against bullying, poverty, injustice and care for the environment. … Reverence is present in our Catholic schools whenever people are moved by their faith to a deep and holy respect. The character of our Catholic school communities speaks about reverence.
The human person is fashioned in God's image and is deserving of specific rights. Some of these rights include: the right to food and shelter, religious freedom, meaningful work, the right to make free decisions and many others. All persons are sacred and deserving of respect and reverence. The students might observe specific media texts to determine if the characters are given the reverence and respect due to them as children of God. Critical analysis can lead to the incorporation of themes that focus on addressing the injustices and challenges faced by many in our world.
Catholic Character Theme: Community
In our Catholic school communities, we learn to see and love Jesus in our study, in our prayer, in each other and in everyone. Jesus feeds and heals us so that we can live as a community: through the words of his Gospel and the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. The Holy Spirit unites us as a community, and gives each of us gifts to help one another grow as followers of Jesus.
We are all created in the image and likeness of God. We grow in understanding of what it means to live in community and pursue the common good. Media texts can be used to promote the common good. In working with media texts the class may consider whether the individual rights of the person and common good are conveyed and the examples that are being used. Students can be invited to create works which convey individuals striving for human fulfillment and assisting others in the community to promote the common good.
