Virtues & Themes: Possible Connections
Theological Virtue: Love
The gift of Christian love enables us to love God above all things and to love others as God loves them. Love is visible in our Catholic schools wherever the kindness, service and self-giving of Jesus are found. |
God is love, and we are made in God's image. We can show our love for one another by learning to listen carefully and respond charitably to others. We can use our speaking skills to build up what is good, in kindness and service to others. As we reflect on our strengths as listeners and speakers, we can use our growing oral communication skills to make the Gospel message of Love more present in our classrooms, schools and lives. |
Theological Virtue: Hope
Hopeful people live the Gospel with joy; they work for peace and justice on earth despite facing many obstacles. They trust that God’s plan will be fulfilled, even if not in their lifetime. |
The gift of hope is something that we witness with words and deeds. Think about how Jesus gave hope to so many poor and suffering people with his words about God's love for them. Others like Mother Teresa, Archbishop Oscar Romero or Jean Vanier have used their oral communication skills to do the same. They learned to listen to others with their mind and heart and respond to their needs. They have spoken with truth and kindness. As they learned more about their strengths and weaknesses, they worked to improve so that they could continue to spread Jesus' message of hope. As followers of Jesus, we too can use our oral communication skills to spread the Gospel message of hope. |
Catholic Character Theme: Compassion
A compassionate person feels another’s pain and opens their heart to that person’s needs. Our true character is expressed when we show compassion for one another. |
Intermediate students are asked to study increasingly sophisticated ideas and concepts. We must prepare them to respond orally to these with the compassion of Jesus and His Gospel. For example, we can challenge students to grow in compassion by asking them to debate an issue from a the perspective of persons who are poor, disadvantaged or suffering. Growth in compassion will lead them to understand there are two sides to every story. This will help them be open to changing opinions and attitudes which run counter to the Gospel. Changed attitudes and opinions will find their way into social interactions between students in the gym, on the playground, and in small group study. Students who learn to express themselves orally with compassion will help make their classrooms, schools, communities and world more compassionate and peaceful places for everyone. |
Catholic Character Theme: Stewardship
Stewardship is about using wisely the gifts God has entrusted to us. We are grateful for what we have received and eager to cultivate our gifts out of love for God and one another. |
Oral communication skills are an important set of gifts we can cultivate with one another to better serve God and neighbour. Good oral communication skills can help us entertain, persuade, explain, describe, recount, inform, predict, clarify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate. These skills can often be strengthened through small group collaboration. In a trusting relationship with peers, students feel comfortable asking for constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement. Ideas will more likely be incorporated into work when words of feedback are chosen in kindness. We can help students become better stewards of their oral communication skills by encouraging them to listen to one another and consider each other’s offers of help. |
