Virtues & Themes: Possible Connections
Theological Virtue: Hope
The gift of hope makes us able to trust in God’s promises. Hopeful people live the Gospel with joy; they work for peace and justice on earth despite facing many obstacles. They trust that God’s plan will be fulfilled, even if not in their lifetime.
We who have been baptized into the death and resurrection of Jesus understand the importance of communicating hope to others. Every aspect of who we are is a means for communicating the hope, beauty and wonder of our life in Christ – a life meant to be lived fully, joyfully and in right relationship with God and neighbour. Hope moves us to express ourselves with purpose and charity. And so, we listen reverently and speak in truth and kindness to one another, using words and attentive silence to build up what is good in others and in our world.
Cardinal Virtue: Fortitude
The cardinal virtue of Fortitude (courage) involves practicing what is good and just when it is difficult or even dangerous. A person of fortitude practices patience when meeting obstacles while working to do what is right, even when others criticize them or remain silent.
Oral communication is a powerful tool for promoting the Gospel's truth and justice. It takes fortitude to speak in front of others and learn from our mistakes. By listening, using skills and strategies with different audiences and reflecting on our strengths, we develop the oral communication skills that can help be convincing witnesses to the Gospel's message. All great speakers and preachers had to start somewhere. It takes fortitude to continue practicing and growing in our oral communication skills, as we become the witnesses to the Gospel that God calls us to be.
Catholic Character Theme: Reverence
We look on all human persons with great reverence. Reverence is present in our Catholic schools whenever people are moved by their faith to a deep and holy respect.
Reverence for one another enables students to see the beauty in their cultural differences and show sensitivity when interacting with peers. Our world is a kaleidoscope of colours and cultures, and we are all God’s children. Whether our students experience this reality in their communities or not, we need to prepare them for treating one another with reverence in the larger world. Interviewing members of cultural groups, asking guest speakers questions about an upcoming cultural event, and listening intently to a classmate describe a favourite tradition are all ways that our students will learn to use their oral communication skills to treat others with reverence.
Catholic Character Theme: Community
In our Catholic school communities, we learn to see and love Jesus in our study, in our prayer, in each other and in everyone.
Junior students can help build community bonds by using their listening and speaking skills for justice purposes. Food bank collections, snowsuit drives, solidarity initiatives, support for local hospitals and missions are perfect opportunities for them to learn about the meaning of community. We can help students to develop these skills through speaking at school assemblies to encourage participation in initiatives such as Jump Rope for Heart, announcing Earth Week activities on the PA system, introducing guest speakers or listening to multiple perspectives in the classroom setting. As students exercise their oral communication skills through leadership in social justice issues, their peers will learn to put themselves in another’s shoes and become Christ-like community builders wherever they are.
