Virtues & Themes: Possible Connections
Theological Virtue: Love
The gift of love enables us to love God above all things and to love others as God loves them. Love is visible in our Catholic schools wherever the kindness, service and self-giving of Jesus are found. |
In the classroom, love is demonstrated in every kind action. This might include: helping one another with mathematics work, listening attentively to the concerns of others, defending those who cannot defend themselves (those who may find math difficult) and generally thinking of others. Students can reflect on the times that they showed kindness (love) to others and times when they could have been more thoughtful. Discuss our obligations in love to one another and solicit ideas from students on how to help one another during math class. Pair students so they can share and assist one another with their work in measurement. |
Theological Virtue: Justice
A just person fulfills their obligations to God in prayer and worship, and to neighbour in mercy and fairness. |
Students in the classroom have obligations to self and to fellow classmates. Working groups also offer support to those requiring encouragement. Discuss small group learning skills and provide opportunities to practice them as students work on measurement problems. This can also extend to other classes in the school by pairing older students with younger ones and by participating in measurement activities around the school. |
Catholic Character Theme: Stewardship
Stewardship is about caring for the gifts God has entrusted to us. We are called to be good stewards of our talents, our bodies, our souls, our communities and of God’s creation. |
When we look at the world around us, we see many different shapes that we can measure and describe. We look at the buildings made by talented people. We need to know how to measure them, calculate their dimensions, compare and describe their attributes to keep them clean and in good repair (e.g., for paint or soap to paint walls and clean floors). We can measure out how much food we need, such as rice, pasta, water, milk, bread etc. We can measure how much water our plants need, how much food and water our pets need. These operations can help us be good stewards of the buildings, people, pets and creation around us. |
Catholic Character Theme: Compassion
We are made in the image and likeness of our compassionate God. Our true character is expressed when we show compassion for one another. |
Brainstorm challenges facing members of the wider community. Look outside the school community to local food shelters and measure, and record quantities of food and drink that might be required to support the needy on a daily, monthly and yearly basis. Explore how their compassionate response can help the situation. |
