Virtues & Themes: Possible Connections
Theological Virtue: Hope
Hope is about trusting in God’s promises, no matter what the obstacles. We are people of hope because of Baptism, which makes us one with Jesus.
|
God has wonderful plans for all of us to bloom and grow in the joy of His love now and into eternity. Primary students often readily embrace the hope of God's promises. They trust those who see their limitless potential with eyes of faith and encourage it with hope-filled hearts. With our encouragement, they can work at making progress despite obstacles. This is no less the case with dance. Whether asked to move as caterpillars turning into butterflies or as raindrops falling through a cloud, primary aged students believe wholeheartedly that they are capable of doing so. They dance “as if no one is looking;” they feel free and eager to participate. Through the joy of dance, they can begin to trust in God's wonderful plans for their lives |
Theological Virtue: Love
The gift of Christian love transforms ...our will, with a disposition to love God above all things and to love others as God loves them. |
We are God's greatest, most beautiful creation. Each of us was made in love, to share God's love with one another. Love is about communicating, understanding one another, and sharing our gifts in kindness. Our compositions can be powerful expressions of this kindness. They can build up the trust and unity of a classroom. Similarly, when love's kindness is present in our feedback to one another's works in communicated feelings, ideas and understandings, we are encouraged to grow and become the creative, expressive persons God created us to be. |
Catholic Character Theme: Community
Jesus is heart of our community. Together with the parish, our Catholic schools are places where we can learn and grow as followers of Jesus. |
Dance is a social activity which can remind us that at our depths, we were created and re-created in Baptism for life with one another in community. When we are asked to work with our classmates to recreate a formal folk dance, we realize quickly that we must collaborate to create our best work. I am not just one person acting independently. Although I am responsible for my individual part, just as important is how we interact as dancing partners. Dance encourages us to connect in a unique way. We rely on each other as we share a space, hold hands or move in a particular direction. Dance is very much about community. |
Catholic Character Theme: Discipleship
Discipleship is about following Jesus and striving to live his Gospel. We find discipleship wherever we see the Kingdom’s love, justice, friendship and prayer in our Catholic schools.
|
Dance always has some kind of theme or message. The dance of our lives speaks of the theme of following Jesus and living his Gospel. We can create compositions that reflect the Kingdom's call to love, justice, friendship and prayer. We can think critically about these pieces and communicate our feelings and understandings about them. We seek to understand the contexts of dance forms past and present and see how themes related to discipleship has been expressed through them. |
