Virtues & Themes: Possible Connections
Theological Virtue: Love
The gift of Christian love enables us to love God above all things and to love others as God loves them. God’s gift of love directs and gives strength to our life of virtue. Our model of love is Jesus, who laid down His life so that we might have life to the full (Jn. 10: 10). |
The media are powerful tools for delivering messages, especially about love. Love for a car, clothing, cell phone or computer is often portrayed in the media as the most important thing in a person's life. But nothing can be more important than love. Love gives us the true perspective for creating media texts and understanding their meaning. Love can guide us as we reflect together and identify our strengthsas media interpreters and creators, areas for improvement, and the strategies they found most helpful in understanding and creating media texts. Read some stories about Jesus, discuss what they mean, then look at media through the lens of His message of love. |
Cardinal Virtue: Justice
Justice is found in persons who practice… -seeking what is good in every situation, and -living in right relationship with God and neighbour. A just person fulfills their obligations to God in prayer and worship, and to neighbour in mercy and fairness. |
The Gospel of Jesus and Church teaching remind us that we were made for justice - for seeking what is good and living in harmony with God and neighbour. As we examine media texts, identify media forms and their meaning, and create media texts, we can ask a simple question: Does the message of this media form promote love of God and neighbour, or does it put something else in their place? The answer to this question will tell how just its message is. Teaching young people to ask these kinds of questions will help equip them for navigating by faith through the confusing array of daily messages that bombard them in the media. |
Catholic Character Theme: Reverence
We treat creation with reverence because it is charged with God’s holy Presence, and is God's sacred gift to sustain the human family. We look on all human persons with great reverence. We are God’s masterpieces, made in the divine image and likeness. |
We are all created in the image of God. Reflecting on the meaning of media texts, interpreting their messages and creating texts provides opportunities to discuss and incorporate the concept of reverence. Helping students identify injustices that reflect a lack of reverence will make them more aware of changes that need to occur and how we can make them happen. Through small group discussion and brainstorming, students can put forth ideas for treating all human persons and creation with reverence. |
Catholic Character Theme: Community
Jesus is the heart of our community. In our Catholic school communities, we learn to see and love Jesus in our study, in our prayer, in each other and in everyone. Jesus feeds and heals us so that we can live as a community: through the words of his Gospel and the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. |
As a community of learners in a Catholic school, the students can interpret, discuss, and create media texts. They will view these media texts through the lens of a common vision and purpose. ”Community is thus a place where a common vision is celebrated and nurtured for the good of its members and the outside world.” (CFCS, Anchor Concept: Community)
In viewing media texts some of the questions that they might ask are:
- Is this what Jesus taught us to do?
- Is this how one should be treating their neighbour?
- What would I do?
