Virtues & Themes: Possible Connections
Theological Virtue: Love
The gift of Christian love enables us to love God above all things and to love others as God loves them. Love is visible in our Catholic schools wherever the kindness, service and self-giving of Jesus are found. |
God is love, and we are made in God's image. We can show our love for one another by learning to listen carefully and respond charitably to others. We can use our speaking skills to build up what is good, in kindness and service to others. As we reflect on our strengths as listeners and speakers, we can use our growing oral communication skills to make the Gospel message of Love more present in our classrooms, schools and lives. |
Theological Virtue: Hope
Hopeful people live the Gospel with joy; they work for peace and justice on earth despite facing many obstacles. They trust that God’s plan will be fulfilled, even if not in their lifetime. |
The gift of hope is something that we witness with words and deeds. Think about how Jesus gave hope to so many poor and suffering people with his words about God's love for them. Others like Mother Teresa, Archbishop Oscar Romero or Jean Vanier have used their oral communication skills to do the same. They learned to listen to others with their mind and heart and respond to their needs. They have spoken with truth and kindness. As they learned more about their strengths and weaknesses, they worked to improve so that they could continue to spread Jesus' message of hope. As followers of Jesus, we too can use our oral communication skills to spread the Gospel message of hope. |
Catholic Character Theme: Discipleship
Through Jesus – God the Son - we have a personal relationship with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. This relationship with the Trinity invites us to build right relationships with family, neighbours, friends, and even strangers. |
As disciples of Jesus, we seek to build right relationships with God and neighbour. Good listening and speaking skills can help us build these relationships with one another. Primary students have many different opportunities to practice these skills. They can sing, read, and chant together throughout the day. We can ask a child to look at the person to whom he/she is speaking or to sit quietly while listening to a classmate. These experiences help children develop life-long skills for treating one another as children of God. Through one another's example, they learn to play together and to work collaboratively as a class. They feel heard and are willing to listen to others in return. Guest speakers and visitors also feel welcome as students exercise these skills as young disciples with them. |
Catholic Character Theme: Reverence
Reverence is a kind of holy respect. We look on all human persons with great reverence. We are God’s masterpieces, made in the divine image and likeness. |
Reverence is the foundation for the way we speak and listen to one another as followers of Jesus. We recognize God’s image in all persons and seek to form our students with communication skills that uphold this understanding. In this way, we are helping prepare a generation of young learners to bring the Gospel’s message to the world. |
