Virtues & Themes: Possible Connections
Theological Virtue: Hope
Hope is about trusting in God’s promises, no matter what the obstacles. Hopeful people work for peace and justice on earth despite facing many obstacles. |
Identifying, classifying, composing and locating shapes that are new or complex can seem like a difficult step for some students. It poses a new way of seeing and thinking. This is like Christian hope, which calls us to see things through the eyes of the resurrection. Hope tells us that God will resolve things for us in His time. We can trust that things will work out for the best, and work to make it happen. We will learn new ways to solve problems, and can work together to make this happen. |
Cardinal Virtue: Fortitude
Fortitude is practicing the good and just in challenging situations and practicing patience when faced with obstacles. |
During all classes students are presented with opportunities to practice fortitude by defending truth and kindness in their relationships with one another. Challenging mathematics questions can become opportunities for students to cultivate fortitude by practicing patience in working out solutions. |
Catholic Character Theme: Community
When the friendship, love and kindness of Jesus are present in our schools, then we are truly living as a community. |
God has given each of us a special part to play in our community. I have some gifts, and you have gifts that I do not have. When we bring our gifts together and help each other, then we are living as a community. Each of the shapes we identify, compose or locate are like our gifts. Some are similar, but each kind of shape is different. They are make up the beauty of the world that we discover through Mathematics. In a similar way, our gifts together make our community exciting and beautiful. |
Catholic Character Theme: Discipleship
Discipleship is about following Jesus and striving to live his Gospel. It is our life-long response to the call of Jesus that we feel in our hearts, saying “come, follow me.” Discipleship is visible wherever we see the Kingdom’s love, justice, friendship and prayer in our Catholic schools. |
Jesus calls each of us to follow him and be his disciples. Some of us are called to be teachers; others, to be construction workers; others, to be a mom or a dad or a sister or priest or a single person. Each of us is special, and Jesus calls each of us to be his disciple in a special way. We are like the circles, triangles, squares and different shapes. All of us are different, yet all of us belong. All of us are called to follow Jesus and spread the love of His Kingdom wherever we are, and in everything we do. |
