Virtues & Themes: Possible Connections
Theological Virtue: Love
Love is visible in our Catholic schools wherever the kindness, service and self-giving of Jesus are found.
Students can be taught about love my sharing a cake. A cake can be brought in. It might be a small cake, so it has to be measured so that everyone can share it. Someone can take measurements of the cake; someone can measure how big the pieces are. If ice cream is brought in, someone can measure the temperature. Someone can measure the size of plates and napkins and height of cups for drinks. Lastly, everyone can take turns serving one another. Preparing food and serving each other with kindness is one way we make love visible.
Theological Virtue: Justice
A just person fulfills their obligations to God in prayer and worship, and to neighbour in mercy and fairness.
A just person treats others with fairness. We can ask students to pretend they are handing out food to people who are hungry. The teacher can bring in have rice, pasta, bottles of water, boxes of dried goods. Students will need to weigh, measure, compare and order objects. Then, the teacher can ask that food be handed out fairly and justly to each member of the class.
Catholic Character Theme: Stewardship
Stewardship is about caring for the gifts God has entrusted to us. We are called to be good stewards of our talents, our bodies, our souls, our communities and of God’s creation.
When we look at the world around us, we see many different shapes that we can measure and describe. We look at the buildings made by talented people. We need to know how to measure them, calculate their dimensions, compare and describe their attributes to keep them clean and in good repair (e.g., for paint or soap to paint walls and clean floors). We can measure out how much food we need, such as rice, pasta, water, milk, bread etc. We can measure how much water our plants need, how much food and water our pets need. These operations can help us be good stewards of the buildings, people, pets and creation around us.
Catholic Character Theme: Solidarity
Solidarity is about standing together with a person or group of persons who are suffering. We belong to one another as a community, and if one member suffers, all of us are suffering. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to solidarity with all persons both near and far away.
When we look at the world around us, we see our many blessings. We have homes, water, fruits and vegetables, and money. We can measure and weigh many of these things and learn to share them with others who have less. This is solidarity.
